The city of Scottsdale has grown from a tiny farming community of 2,000 in 1951, to a vibrant city and cultural mecca with over 220,000 residents spread over an area of 185 square miles today. Scottsdale real estate is more expensive than in most any other town or city, except for its neighbors, Carefree and Paradise Valley. The median home price in Scottsdale is $385,000, but Scottsdale real estate prices range from $120,000 for a condo to a stately mansion that is priced at over $13 million. The northern part of Scottsdale, and its northern neighbors, Cave Creek and Carefree, have many of the newer and more expensive luxury homes – many over the million mark.
Scottsdale, Arizona and the surrounding areas are home to affluent valley residents. Median gross income for Scottsdale last year was over $5200/month, trailing Carefree ($8,000/month), Cave Creek ($5450/month), Gilbert ($6185/month) and Paradise Valley ($13,600!), but at about the same level as Chandler and Fountain Hills.
There are more than a million workers within a 30-minute commute from neighboring Tempe, Chandler, Phoenix, Cave Creek, Carefree and Paradise Valley. Scottsdale is a major employment hub, with companies such as Scottsdale Healthcare, General Dynamics, Vanguard Group, Scottsdale Princess Resort, AdvancePCS, and Scottsdale Insurance Company. The Scottsdale area is home to many mid-sized software companies, such as Thompson Learning, DHL, and Go Daddy Software. The healthcare industry is big in Scottsdale, with the famed Mayo Clinic, which employs over 4,000, Scottsdale Healthcare and CareMark. Scottsdale also has corporate headquarters of some names you might have heard of, like P.F. Changs China Bistro, Dial Corporation and Taser International.
City planners aim to keep quality of life high, with over 1,100 acres of developed park land, 36 acres of lakes, 45 miles of bike paths and 50 miles of multi-use trails. McDowell Mountain Preserve is a 10,865 acre natural open space of mountains and desert for local residents to enjoy.
Everyone wants to be in Scottsdale, so traffic can be congested at peak commute times. Some areas have traffic cameras posted, waiting to photograph and send tickets to speeders and red light runners, so be aware when you are driving in the area.
